@daywalker right, that's actually expected. When you create an account, it does create an exchange account, but doesn't finalise it. It attempts to connect to the remote server and ensure that authentication succeeds - if that succeeds, it then finalises it (by finalise I mean stores some final bits of state in the credentials database), but if it fails then it deletes the non-finalised account.
So in all cases, it seems that what is failing is the authentication step with the remote server.
This code is located in qmf-activesync-plugin so that is where I will continue to investigate...
I will try again to reproduce with various exchange servers, perhaps hotmail / live / msn too.
